John Atkinson Grimshaw was born in Leeds in 1836 and became one of the most successful oil painters of the nineteenth century, known for his moonlit urban landscapes. He used Victorian photographic techniques, projecting outlines onto canvases with a camera obscura or even painting over photographs.
