In this painting by Odilon Redon, Ophelia the heroine in William Shakespeare's play 'Hamlet' rests within a luminous space filled with colourful flowers. Unlike her vivid surroundings her face is drained of colour suggesting that she is either dead or sleeping. Redon has created a dream like response to Shakespeare's drama rather than a literal illustration of it highlighted by the glowing effect he has created with the use of rich pastel colour. This print is colour matched to the original and approved by the National Gallery. Every purchase supports the work of the museum.
