Ophelia among the Flowers

In this painting by Odilon Redon, Ophelia the heroine in William Shakespeare's play 'Hamlet' rests within a luminous space filled with colourful flowers. Unlike her vivid surroundings her face is drained of colour suggesting that she is either dead or sleeping. Redon has created a dream like response to Shakespeare's drama rather than a literal illustration of it highlighted by the glowing effect he has created with the use of rich pastel colour.
